My wife and I purchased our current home about 5 years ago. It was built in 1997 and is not 11 years old. THe windows are Pella Designer wood casements with a double sliding glass door in the back.
The house us full of nice oak trim and solid hardwood doors/floors. THe humidity is about 45% at the start of fall, but usually falls off to 25-30% in the winter.
Of course, we have the same problems as others. Insane rolling condensation when the temps get below 10 degrees F. To make matters worse, it usually ends up freezing on the wood where the outer frame touches the seals, or it freezes on the top of the alum. outer frame below the window.
The sliding glass door is a mess. Aside from the same condensation problems, even the sides of the frame sweats and the seal doesn't really seal at the bottom. All in all, these windows want me to tear my hair out.
The front door is some huge steal insulated Pella with a full length glass front. IT never condenses. We also have two no-name brand double hung windows in the basement that also never condense.
At this point, I wish they would just rot out already so I had an excuse to replace them with something better. I've had a Pella guy out once who replaced one seal (which made no difference), and he claimed that ice freezing on the wood was normal.
Yeah right. |
